SAFETY DEVICES

BladexTM (BLDX-2260-DS)

The purpose of the Bladex System is to eliminate the manual blade changing process for scalpel users. Scalpel blades are among the most common and highest risk tools used in hospitals, laboratories, and in the food processing industry. Risks of injury and infection occur whenever dull, contaminated blades are removed and replaced with new blades. In addition to these serious risks, the current process of changing blades is often cumbersome and time consuming.

The Bladex System eliminates the need to manually remove a blade from its handle. As a second step, it replaces the handle with a new blade. With Bladex, a user simply inserts the scalpel handle with the used blade and then withdraws the handle with a fresh new blade attached. The entire process takes only 2 to 3 seconds. During this one handed operation, the user is totally out of harm's way and the used blade is disposed of in a sealed biohazard sharps container.

There are two additional important safety features of the Bladex System.
The handle incorporates a self-locking mechanism, which eliminates the potential danger of blades coming out of the handle; a hazard that most handles on the market have.
The handle is designed to reduce blade flexure. This is particularly important for users who cut large masses of solid tissue. The device and handles are designed so the device itself will not become contaminated and is essentially maintenance free.

More Information:

The Bladex System is the result of a proprietary technology developed over the past several years. We have now been awarded US and International patents and trademarks.

The recent global emphasis on the need to improve medical tool safety, reduce contamination, and control biohazard disposal prompted our innovation of this new blade changing and disposal technology. Former president Clinton signed a bill in November 2000 that established new federal safety measures for the use of sharps systems - needles and blades. The revised OSHA standards can be viewed in our research section.
